South Africa takes winning 2-0 lead in U19 ODI series

South Africa won the three-match Under 19 one-day international cricket series against Sri Lanka when they scored a 49-run win in the second match played at Oudtshoorn on Friday.

Batting first South Africa U19 was restricted to a total of 220-8 with fast bowler Nipun Ransika being the main wicket-taker for Sri Lanka with figures of four for 39.

Opener Matthew Breetzke (68) and Raynard von Tander (61) scored half centuries as South Africa reached 166-2 by the 39th over and looked good for a total in excess of 300. But Sri Lanka fought back to capture six wickets for 54 runs and keep the target within gettable proportions.

However Sri Lanka’s run chase was put in disarray by the South African opening bowlers who reduced them to 93-6 before they were able to stage some sort of a fightback, but it was not enough to get within range of the South African total and they were eventually bowled out for 171 in the 45th over to hand the home team a winning 2-0 lead in the series.

Top scorers for Sri Lanka was wicket-keeper/opener Vishwa Chaturanga with 40 off 41 balls and Ashen Bandara with 39 off 61 balls. The third and final match of the series will be played at the same venue on February 5..
