First picture of Amazon coral reef

26 February, 2017

A huge coral reef system in the Amazon was discovered last year. The first set of pictures of the reef have just been released by environmental campaigners.

The Amazon Reef is a 9,500 sq km system of corals, sponges and rhodoliths. It ranges from about 25-120m in depth.

The reef is almost 1,000 km long, and is located where the Amazon River meets the Atlantic Ocean.

Enviromental campaingers, such as Greenpeace, are scared that oil drilling could start operations in the area if companies do obtain permits from the Brazilian government. Greenpeace says drilling in the area means a “constant risk of an oil spill”. - Internet
