One killed in accident

One person was killed when the vehicle he was travelling in veered off the road and struck a tree and a utility pole in Akuressa, Matara yesterday. According to the Police, the driver had lost control of the vehicle resulting in the accident.

Four people including the driver were seriously injured and admitted to the Matara Hospital where one passenger succumbed to his injuries later in the day. The deceased, 33-year-old Wijesekara Liyanage Damith Prasanna was a resident Godagama, Palatuwa. Matara Police are carrying out further investigations.

Two arrested with heroin

The Western Province Anti Vice Investigations Unit and the Mount Lavinia Police arrested two people for the possession of heroin on Friday. While one suspect, a resident of Mattakkuliya was nabbed with 10 grams of heroin at Ferguson Road, Mattakkuliya the other, a 41-year-old male was arrested at First Lane, Mount Lavinia with two grams of heroin.

Illicit liquor brewers nabbed

Officers of the Minuwangoda Police nabbed a person suspected to have been brewing illicit liquor at Katuwellegama in theMinuwangoda area. The Police raided the illicit brewing centre on Friday around 11 pm based on information received.

The officers also confiscated 101 litres of illicit liquor, 1,890 litres of Goda used to brew the liquor, two gas cylinders, two gas stoves and two copper coils. Minuwangoda Police are carrying out further investigations.

Motorcyclist killed

A motorcyclist was killed on Friday night in Horowpothana near the Yan Oya Bridge. According to the Police, the motorcyclist had collided with a car travelling in the opposite direction towards Trincomalee and was declared dead on being brought to the Horowpothana hospital. The victim was 55-year-old Sinnage Dasanayake, a resident of Medawachchiya.
