President visits Jaffna Security Forces Headquarters

President Maithripala Sirisena, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces made the first formal visit to Jaffna on March 4.

The President with several Cabinet Members, Acting Secretary to the Ministry of Defence, Chief of Defence Staff , Tri-Service Commanders and Inspector General of Police attended a series of meetings during the visit.

Troops of the Security Force (Jaffna) – SF (J) in line with military traditions accorded a drive-past Guard Turnout to the visiting Commander-in-Chief.

Soon after the military formalities, the visiting Commander-in-Chief was invited to plant a ‘Naa’ sapling at the HQ SF (J) premises as a symbol of memory of his visit.

The President also had a cordial meeting with a gathering of ex-servicemen residing in Jaffna. A cash gift of Rs 10,000 and gifts were presented by the President.

President Maithripala Sirisena then went to Sri Lanka Air Force hangar to address an estimated gathering of 4,000 tri-service troops and police personnel.

Major General Mahesh Senanayake, Commander, Security Force (Jaffna) delivered the formal welcome address on behalf of tri-service troops, in Jaffna Peninsula.

In his address, the President insisted on the significance of raising the standards of the services and the Police to match with international standards through enhancing professionalism and training.

He also underlined the need of maintaining the hard-earned peace for the country’s future prosperity and assured that the government would to perform all possible approaches to sustain the status-quo.

A lunch gathering where all ranks participated was held with over 200 Army, Navy, Air Force and Police personnel at Security Force Headquarters (Jaffna).

Major General Mahesh Senanayake, Commander, SF (J) presented a memento to the President.
