A river in Sri Lanka

12 March, 2017

The longest river in Sri Lanka is the Mahaweli. It begins from Sri Pada and joins the sea in Trincomalee. ‘Mahaweli’ means the great sandy river. The river Mahaweli is very important to us. It provides water for many uses.

The Mahaweli River flows through many villages. It passes Kandy, Mahiyangana, Polonanruwa and ends in Trincomalee. Kotmale Oya and Badulla Oya contribute water to the Mahaweli River.

People abuse this river by throwing garbage and polluting its environment. They should be educated about the importance of this river and the value of clean water.

If the river banks get damaged, it can cause floods. During heavy rainfall, the river overflows and it becomes dangerous. We should be aware of these facts. A river is a natural resource of water. It also adds beauty to the environment. So we should make use of rivers without harming them.
