Housing scheme opened in Grandpass

Jayamaga Sevana, a housing scheme constructed in Mahawatta, Grandpass by the Urban Development Authority for the slum dwellers of Bloemendhal was handed over to the public yesterday by Minister of Megapolis and Western Development, Patali Champika Ranawaka.

The scheme was built at a cost of Rs. 162 million under the Divisuru Purawara project implemented by the UDA under the guidance of the Ministry of Megapolis and Western Development.

The scheme, consisting of 68 dwellings were handed over to residents with each dwelling comprising two bed rooms, sitting area, kitchen, balcony and bathroom.

The Minister said the aim of the government is not only to simply provide better housing but to change the lives of the less fortunate.

¨We are focusing on education, self-employment opportunities, sports and many other areas to benefit these people¨ he said adding that changing the attitudes of the people have been a tough task for all agencies involved. ¨We request them to give their children a chance away from drugs and crime happening in these places,” he said.

Meanwhile Minister Ranawaka said the Bloemendhal garbage dump will be fully cleared in three years to make way for an urban park while part of it will be used for commercial activities of the Colombo harbour. - MB
