19 March, 2017

With the formation of inter-monsoon rains in the atmosphere, the Ceylon Electricity Board says that they are positive that the reservoir levels will increase. Speaking to the Sunday Observer Chairman CEB Anura Wijeypala said that the water levels have risen to a 37 percent from 30 percent which will increase further.

According to the Chairman the current water levels will be sufficient for a supply of hydro power for duration of 30 to 40 days under normal circumstances. However, relying on weather forecasts the expectation is that there will be an increase in the hydro power generation.

Weather forecasts according to the Meteorology Department that rains will be lesser compared to the past weeks, nevertheless rains will occur.

Director of the Met Dept., Athula Karunanayaka said that under the inter monsoon period that prevails in the months of March and April rains with thunder showers will occur only towards the latter part of the day which will develop towards the coastal areas.

“When compared to the last year we have been receiving a fairly low rain in the south West region in the country.” Karunanayaka said.

“About 90 percent of the electricity consumption is met by thermal power and this has been the case from the beginning of this year,” the CEB Chariman said.
