19 March, 2017

Vocational Training and Skills Development Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe denied allegations that he possessed dual citizenship and hence cannot function as a legislator in Sri Lankan parliament.

The Minister made these comments speaking at a Press conference responding to a statement by UPFA MP Geetha Kumarasinghe that she was not only the Member of Parliament with the dual citizenship, the Minister saidhe had never sought dual citizenship from any country, not even Switzerland as alleged. The Minister held a press conference yesterday to counter a statement MP Kumarasinghe has made to a weekend newspaper that Minister Samarasinghe held dual citizenship in Switzerland.

The Minister said such malicious and misleading statements were made against him even earlier by the actress turned MP, giving wide publicity in the web-based news outlets but he remained unperturbed .

Four residents of Galle have challenged MP Kumarasinghe’s parliamentary seat in Courts. A verdict on the case is expected on May 3. - MF
