Thomians keep Mustangs trophy for fourth consecutive year

S. Thomas’ College Mt. Lavinia retained the Mustangs Trophy for the fourth consecutive year when they defeated traditional rivals Royal College by 11 runs in a closely fought out 42nd Battle of the Blues limited-over cricket encounter played at the SSC grounds yesterday. The Thomians invited to bat first rattled off an impressive 258 for 7 wickets in 50 overs. Royal replied with 247-9 providing a thrilling finish to the contest. Thomian opener and deputy skipper Ravindu Kodithuwakku scored 95 off 113 balls with 11 fours and 2 sixes and was supported by skipper Romesh Nallaperuma – 53 off 70 balls (3 fours). The pair added 73 for the fourth wicket. Ishen Perera weighed in with 36 not out off 43 balls (2 fours).

In Royal’s reply Thevindu Senaratne smacked 71 off 69 balls with 8 fours and 3 sixes. Opener Lakindu Nanayakkara scored 44 and skipper Helitha Vithanage 33. Senaratne and Vithanage were involved in a 86 runs stand for the sixth wicket and, Lakindu Nanayakkara and Ahan Wickramasinghe shared a partnership of 75 for second.

Ravindu Kodithuwakku of S. Thomas’ was adjudged man of the match. – [YK]
