Wimal’s condition turns critical

26 March, 2017

The condition of MP Weerawansa, the leader of the National Freedom Front leader, is turning very critical as he has refrained from taking any food for more than 100 hours by yesterday, UPFA Kalutara district MP Jayantha Samaraweera said. He said doctors have confirmed that his life is in danger as his blood pressure is coming down rapidly. Therefore, if any threat is caused to the life of MP Weerawansa, the Government should take responsibility for it, the NFF front liner said.

He said that National Freedom Front (NFF) leader MP Wimal Weerawansa’s fast unto death campaign is not a move whatsoever launched against the judiciary and it is a protest against the judiciary process launched against him.

As the Joint Opposition and the NFF, we have already raised our voice in Parliament on this matter. In addition, we have launched a campaign to educate the public regarding this matter. This issue was also taken up at the JO’s ‘Peraliyaka Erabuma’ public rally at Habaraduwa yesterday (March 25), MP Samaraweera told the Sunday Observer yesterday.

MP Weerawansa has not launched this hunger strike demanding that he be released. What he points out is even though over 71 days have lapsed since being remanded, some suspects who had been charged for serious offences have been granted bail by the High Court.

MP Samaraweera said, “We call upon the Government the meet the same justice to MP Weerawansa too which was granted for others who were even charged for serious offences. We request the Government to take necessary steps to grant bail to the MP and also not interfere into the judiciary process launched his case.

MP Weerawansa respected the ruling given by the High Court to refuse his bail application and fully respects the judiciary. He went to High Court as the Magistrate Court didn’t grant him bail. However, even the High Court rejected his bail application. Some Magistrates and Buddhist monks who had been charged for serious offenses were granted bail. But Parliamentarian Weerawansa’s bail application was rejected.

“This is a clear testimony on the witch hunt launched by the Government against its political opponents,” he added.
