BOGAMBARA stadium in bad shape

26 March, 2017

The historic Bogambara Ground currently is in bad shape, and renovation is badly needed, the running track is like a concrete surface and the ground has hardly any grass and the sportsmen and the sportswomen are at a great risk in injuring themselves due to the rock like surface which needs urgent renovations. The ground over the years has been neglected despite being the hub for many of the sporting events in Kandy.

It is high time that the sports minister who is keen to give a hand for the development of sports intervenes and inspect the stadium and upgrade this multi-purpose ground in Kandy considered one of the oldest in the country.

It is currently used mostly for rugby , athleltics, football and hockey at school level.

It was in 1897 the ground was converted from a lake to a playing field. At one time it was the site for carnivals, games circuses and gymkhana activities and even as an execution ground during the regime of the British.

Almost every school and club in Kandy used Bogambara to conduct their sporting activities. Bogambara was renovated and converted into a stadium in 1972, thanks to the Special Commissioner late M.B. Samarakoon and E.W. Balasuriya the famous sports promoter in Kandy who masterminded the development with generous donations.

In 1998 the late Anurudha Ratwatte as the Defence Minister was instrumental in providing some facilities.

This stadium was originally owned by the Kandy Municipal Council who maintained it well with reasonable rates for users. But today it cannot be said the the same.
