2 April, 2017

The Educational Non-Academic Employees Union is now requesting that non-academic employees of schools and other government educational institutions who have recently obtained university degrees should be given positions suitable to their newly obtained academic qualifications.

Writing to the Minister of Education, Akila Viraj Kariyawasam, the General Secretary of the Union, Ajith K. Thilakaratne pointed out that over 500 such employees have now acquired university degrees while being employed and therefore, they should be given suitable positions.

Among those requesting new positions are junior grade workers employed as clerical assistants, laboratory assistants, sanitation workers, library assistants, security guards and cooks in various government educational institutions. According to Thilakaratne, new designations such as school library management assistant and school library development assistant have been suggested as new positions for the graduates.

¨We have stressed that these employees should be given new positions in line with the academic qualifications obtained,¨ Thilakarathne said.
