President Maithripala Sirisena will be the chief guest at the entertainment show at the Nelum Pokuna Theatre on April 27 where creations of the winners of the Mahaweli Inter Regional Cultural Tournament will also be displayed. Children from Grades 6-12 as well as young men and women will participate.

The multi-purpose Mahaweli project apart from its irrigation development has given pride of place to identify and promote the inmate aesthetic talents of the children of the Mahaweli peasantry. On a concept by President Maithripala Sirisena, who is also the Minister Mahaweli Development & Environment, various aesthetic programs were launched culminating in the setting up of the Mahaweli Cultural Ensemble to identify and improve artistic talents of the Mahaweli children, and preserve indigenous culture and familiarize it among the people. Efforts will also be made to provide a platform to display their talents and eventually help eke out a successful living. The Mahaweli Centre takes pride in providing an aesthetic education to the children, and holds singing, dancing, art, song, short drama and oratory competitions.

The Sri Lanka Mahaweli Authority, together with its subsidiary, Mahaweli Centre is dedicated to make the cultural lives of the colonists’ second and third generation more viable.

The Mahaweli project which covers about 40 percent of the country’s land mass gives shelter to children with various inborn talents, especially aesthetics, and harness it for national pride.
