People should act as a responsible social force

30 April, 2017

President Maithripala Sirisena in his May Day message called on the working class to play a vital role to face the challengers of reconciliation in the country and to achieve economic prosperity.

Saluting comrades of the working class all around the world, the President reiterated the importance of the day which symbolizes the historic victory of the power of human labour that defeated the superior structures of civilization.

“I believe that the working people will act as a responsible social force while strengthening their career rights, benefits and privileges while being sensitive to the entire gamut of the economic process of the country as well as new global trends,” The President stated in a press communiqué.

Emphasizing the role played by the working class, that has now enlarged into a more powerful force through years of struggle, to win back Sri Lanka’s democracy, President Sirisena reiterated that future challenges must be met with the same energy and enthusiasm.

“The International Workers’ Day reminds us of the arduous path which the workers trod, sacrificing blood, sweat and tears from an era in which the iron-chained workers were considered as the property of the employers to the present day when the employers and employees could thrash out issues at a round table discussion. The May Day gives us an opportunity to mark the victories achieved by Sri Lankan workers from the day S.W.R.D Bandaranaike declared May 1 as a holiday.

“This year’s May Day gives us more vigour as it is celebrated at a time when the Great Russian Revolution of the 1917 marks its centenary. I join the working people who celebrate May Day all over the world, with warmth and encouragement. I also salute all the working comrades who sacrificed their lives, raised their voices and shed blood and sweat for human freedom and labour rights.”
