Indian PM to visit Gangaramaya

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi who will arrive on Thursday to take part in the 14th UN Vesak day celebrations is due to visit the Gangaramaya Buddharashmi Vesak Zone upon arrival in Colombo.

An official source said the Indian Premier will be here from May 11-12 and will be the chief guest at the inauguration at the BMICH on May 12. President Maithripala Sirisena will host the Indian leader for lunch at the President’s Official Residence in Kandy on Friday.

He is also scheduled to travel to Dickoya on Friday to open a hospital for estate workers, built with Indian funding. Later Premier Modi will address a public meeting organised by the Tamil Progressive Alliance. Security has been beefed up in Colombo in view of his visit and the presence of foreign dignitaries. A police spokesman said they have made security arrangements to ensure the peaceful conduct of the international celebrations where thousands of local devotees are also expected to throng Colombo and Kandy, the main venues of the Vesak festivities. The Police Department has deployed over 6,000 police and STF personnel for the task.
