Thunder showers in many parts today

Rain and thunder showers will occur in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, Central and North-western provinces today, the Department of Meteorology announced. According to the Department fairly heavy falls of more than 50 mm can be expected at some places.

Showers or thundershowers may also occur at several places in the Uva province and in the Batticaloa district after 2.00 pm today.

Fairly strong winds at times up to 50 kmph are also to be expected over the island, especially in the western slope of the central hills while strong winds will be experienced at times in the surrounding sea areas up to 60 to 70 kmph. These winds can be strengthened during showers, the Department warned.

The naval and fishing communities have been requested to be vigilant as the sea areas off the coasts extending from Puttalam to Trincomalee via Mannar and sea areas off the coast extending from Hambantota to Pottuvil can be very rough at times as the wind speed may increase up to 60-70 kmph at times.

Other sea areas can be fairly rough at times as the wind speed can increase up to 50 kmph at times. The highest rainfall of 57.1 mm was reported from Gampaha during the last 24 hours the Department said.
