Constitution making process : TNA to meet SLFP and JO representatives

4 June, 2017

Tamil National Alliance (TNA) representatives led by Opposition Leader R. Sampanthan are due to meet the SLFP and Joint Opposition representatives to discuss the Constitution making process next week, official sources said yesterday.

A TNA Northern Provincial Councilor speaking to the Sunday Observer on Saturday said there is a proposal for a meeting between the two groups but nothing has been finalised yet.

The coalition of Tamil parties, TNA has said that they were dissatisfied with the slow progress of evolving a constitutional solution to the problems of the Northern Tamils as promised by the Government.

The TNA had reportedly complained to the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and sought his intervention to pressurize the Sri Lankan government on the matter when the latter was here to attend the inauguration of the international UN Vesak Day last month.

The SLFP faction of the government especially the members supporting the Joint Opposition rejects any proposal to replace the existing Constituion, They have already announced that they will only back it if the government brings in an amendment and not a new constitution.

But the TNA is adament that only a new constitution will resolve their woes.
