The government is looking at the possibility of creating a niche tourism concept by promoting ‘Dutch forts and culture’ among tourists.

Accordingly, Fort Fredrick in Trincomalee and the Fort in Mannar will be developed as two main tourist sites with some renovation work and proper facilities for tourists. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has directed Chairman of Western Region Megapolis Plan Project (WRMPP), Ajita de Costa, to prepare a project plan to develop the ‘Dutch Tourism’ concept in Sri Lanka.

De Costa said this plan will help increase the number of Dutch tourists to the island.
