Professional contributions for transport and logistics industry

The Sri Lanka Society for Transport and Logistics (SLSTL) will hold the 2nd International Conference on Research for Transport and Logistics Industry (R4TLI) -2017 in partnership with CML Walkers on July 22 at the Galle Face Hotel, Colombo.

R4TLI is an initiative that endeavors to promote research and development in the transport and logistics sector in Sri Lanka and the region that would help diagnose its current issues and identify potential improvements based on scientific evidence.

This 2ndannual research conference intends to build a platform where the needs of the industry can be discussed and scientific processes developed for rectification of issues can be showcases through research presentations, the organizers said.

The Sri Lanka Society for Transport and Logistics (SLSTL) a member of the Eastern Asia Society for Transportation Studies (EASTS) will be organizing the conference with sponsorship of CML Walkers.

It will seek endorsements from the Eastern Asia Society for Transportation Studies (EASTS), along with government and private sector agencies in Sri Lanka.

The primary objective of SLSTL which was formed in 2014 is to provide and maintain an active network of professionals engaged in transport and logistics for the promotion of continuing professional development that would contribute towards the progress of the transport and logistics industry in Sri Lanka. The membership comprises those who have professionally qualified and conduct or promote the study and research of solutions for transport problems through a scientific process. Last years’ conference held in June 2016 was well attended with over 160 participants from different sectors in the transport and logistics field including both government and private sectors. Two invited papers and over 40 papers were presented.

Two invited papers were presented by two speakers from Japan representing EASTS. It includes a paper on Introduction of Urban Freight Survey in Tokyo Metropolitan Area by Prof. Naohisa Okamoto, Professor, University of Tsukuba, Japan and the Secretary General of Eastern Asia Society for Transportation Studies (EASTS).

The second invited paper was presented by Prof Shinya Hanoka on Sustainable Regional Logistics & Supply Chain in Asia.

The one-day conference this year to be held on July 22 at the Galle Face Hotel will include 41 peer reviewed presentations of research work from international and local researchers as well as research students on topics of direct local relevance of the topics such as Transport Policy, Supply Chain Performance, Public Transport, Transport Modelling and Maritime Transport

The Organising Committee (OC) includes Prof. Amal S. Kumarage, University of Moratuwa (Chair), Dr TL Gunaruwan, University of Colombo(Co-chair/Editor), Dr. Ganga Samarasekera, Sri Jayawardenapura University, Dr. Tissa Liyanage, Master Hellie’s Engineering Consultants, Dr. Pradeepa Jayaratne, University of Moratuwa and Namalie Siyambalapitiya, Road Development Authority.
