Illicit liquor smugglers nabbed
Mount Lavinia Police arrested two men suspected to have been transporting a stock of arrack in a trishaw without a liquor permit. The Police acting on a tip-off apprehended the duo on Hotel Road, Mount Lavinia on Friday night. The suspects aged 62 and 55 were residents of Mount Lavinia and Dehiwala.
Girl commits suicide on rail track
A teenager committed suicide on Friday by jumping in front of a train in Kalutara. According to the Police, the incident had taken place near the Kalutara Bodhi. The train had been plying from Maradana to Galle.
The deceased has been identified as 18-year-old Nipuni Imasha Jothiratne of Marikkar Street, Kalutara South. Kalutara Police are investigating.
Trishaw accident kills child
A head-on collision between a trishaw and a truck has resulted in the death of a 12-year-old in Pallikuda, Tangalle on Friday. The three-wheeler was travelling towards Matara at the time.
The driver of the trishaw, his wife along with four children were admitted to the Tangalle Hospital in a critical condition and one child later succumbed to her injuries. The child, 12-year-old Hiruni Kaushalya was a resident of Madipola, Galewela. The driver of the truck was arrested by the Tangalle Police.
