Gayan leads Kandy SC this season

6 August, 2017

Kandy Sports Club the defending league and knockout champions on Wednesday started training for the coming season and preparing to maintain their previous year’s performance. So the club’s destiny will be in the hands of the talented players now at practices and the Rugby Chairman Lasantha Wijesuriya who led the Nittawela Club to win the triple by being unbeaten

in all three tournaments in 1997 under the coaching of DIG Nimal Leuke. Lasantha has wide experience and his positive approach is drawing the players to Nittawela with innovative ideas that encourages the players for a team which has done well over one and half decades. Wijesuriya who took over the Kandy Sports Club Chairmanship of rugby in 2002 helped the club to reach the top spot in rugby. Under his guidance rugby achieved great success and hit the top at rugby though the administration of the club is apparently fading. A knowledgeable figure in the rugby scene he also helped his old school St. Anthony’s College to win the Plate this season after many years.

During his career he was a fast running and a dare devil tackler. He started his rugby at St. Anthony’s College, after leaving school he played for CH and FC for a few seasons and returned to his home town to play for Kandy SC. Destiny of Kandy Sports Club In the forthcoming season is in the hands of three individuals namely Gayan Weerarthne, captain Sean Wijayasinghe, coach and Lasantha Wijesuriya, rugby Chairman, all three are knowledgeable with the game and should handle the team well. Gayan Weeraratne a product of Kingswood College is the brother of last year’s captain Roshan Weerarathne who plays as center should be a good leader .

The head coach Sean Wijesinghe who guided the side to win the league and the knock out Tourney last season is sure to continue his good work. A product of Trinity College he represented the club for many years and also captained the club and the country. The assistant coach is the famous utility player Saliya Kumara who learned his rugby at Vidyartha College and later went to Trinity College where he polished his game; he also played for CH & FC, Havelock SC, Kandy SC and Sri Lanka. Kapila Silva with his many years of experience represented Isipathana College, CH and FC, CR and FC, Kandy Sports Club and the national team serve as Manager.
