President turns 66

President Maithripala Sirisena celebrates his 66th birthday today. He was born on September 3, 1951 at Yagoda, Gampaha in the Western Province and grew up in Polonnaruwa in the North Central Province.

He was the General Secretary of the SLFP from 2001 to November 2014.

Having joined mainstream politics in 1989 as a Member of Parliament, he has held several key ministerial portfolios since 1994.

He is the President of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) and was the longest serving General Secretary of the party.

President Sirisena, who served as the Minister of Health, left the former government in November 2014 to contest the 2015 presidential election as the common candidate.

Following his landmark victory he took oaths as the sixth Executive President on January 9, 2015.
