Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea by Jules Verne is a science fiction novel set in the mid-nineteenth century. Verne also wrote the adventure novels Around the World in Eighty Days and Journey to the Centre of the Earth.
The novel begins with a sense of mystery and intrigue. 1866 was the year of mystery.
There were rumours that thrilled the public and angered the sailors. Even in the suburbs of all the countries, naval officers and governments of various countries were greatly interested in this matter. For some time ships had witnessed a big, giant spindle like thing which was faster than a whale.
Those who had witnessed this massive giant estimated it to be around two hundred feet in length and very wide. The existence of such a supernatural powerful creature can create anxiety in any one.
This creature is a submarine named Nautilus which is commanded by Captain Nemo. The novel is narrated by Professor Pierre Aronnax, a French marine biologist. The whaler named Ned Land is also a major character in the novel. The plot of the novel charts the adventures of these main characters on board the submarine Nautilus.
