Kiralakele cleaned up

Students of the University of Ruhuna joined Sri Lanka Unites Reconciliation Centre, Kamburupitiya, recently, to rid the periphery of the Kiralakele wetland sanctuary of rubbish left behind by passers by.

Kiralakele ecosystem comprising of 310 hectares of wetland in the Thihagoda Divisional Secretary Area in the Matara district was declared a sanctuary on the 8th of September 2013 and is home to 83 species of plants, 13 varieties of mammals and 103 varieties of birds.

The eco system is threatened by development, invasive plants, animals and garbage. The clean-up project was coordinated by the Career Guidance Unit of the University of Ruhuna and the Sri Lanka Unites.
