Suppose that you are travelling in a bus on a warm, dry day. You look at the road ahead of the bus. You think that you see puddles in the road. You can see sunlight shining in the puddles. Soon you get to where the puddles seemed to be. They are gone! What really happened? The puddles that you saw were not real. Sunshine on a hot road could create a mirage. A mirage is something that you see but is not real.
