Police to reward law abiding drivers

A program to motivate law abiding drivers in Colombo organised by the Police is set to take off on Tuesday under the guidance of IGP Pujith Jayasundara. According to Police Spokesperson SP Ruwan Gunasekara, disciplined and law abiding drivers will be awarded prizes amounting to Rs. 10 million during the program.

The Police media unit said the program will be held in the areas of Colombo 1 to 15 from September 18 onwards, as part of an island-wide effort which will be conducted in several stages.

Officers from the Traffic Police Division will be stationed in several strategic locations while Policemen in civvies will monitor drivers in public transport services to identify law abiding drivers. Police teams in unmarked vehicles will also take to the roads in order to join the effort. ¨The Police will identify drivers who are not only law abiding but disciplined and courteous to other road users¨ SP Gunasekara said adding that however road rule violators will also be penalized during the special program.

The Police will present chosen motorists with a special sticker, and a gift voucher worth Rs.1650 for a free medical health check. The program is sponsored by several leading private organizations, the Police said. According to the Police, the aim of the program is to encourage motorists to drive in a disciplined manner and reduce the number of traffic law violations.

The program in Colombo is to be lead by DIG Traffic Chula De Silva along with a team comprising of SP City Traffic Sumith Nissanka, ASP Traffic Colombo Central Lucian Suriyabandara, ASP Colin Bamunuarachchi and SI D.M.N. Pushpakumara.
