Govt invests heavily on innovation

The government encourages new thinking and has invested heavily in this regard to achieve national development. The Ministry of Science, Technology and Research has planned a series of activities to fast track the development of the country, a top official of the Ministry said.

“A decision has been taken to set up a science centre in Pitipana at a cost of Rs 2.5 billion.

A fund has been created to encourage inventors and support their innovations. The government is moving towards educational reforms to create a back ground to recognize inventors,” Ministry of Science, Technology and Research Secretary Udaya Seneviratne said.

Speaking at the opening of “Sahasak Nimavum 2017” national exhibition for inventions and innovations, he said that a techno city has been planned in Homagama and Malambe to attract youth in to the field of advanced technology.

“The government will invest Rs 6 billion to build a high tech innovation park and another Rs 3 million for a techno lab in Pitipana.

Steps have been taken to attract local and foreign investors to the sector, with facilities to enable technology to be made popular among the youth,” he said.

“We have allocated Rs 2 billion to develop nano technology and have concerted plans to take the medical sector to the next level by investing in genomics and digital health. With all these facilities in place we expect the children of the next generation to be more interested in Science and Technology,” he said.

The “Sahasak Nimavum 2017” exhibition where nearly 400 inventors exhibited their innovations ended yesterday.
