Sri Mahindarama Viharaya located at Mailankarachchi, Valaichenai, Batticaloa was abandoned during the period of terrorism as it was badly damaged.

Later, the chief incumbent Ven. K. Mahindalankara There decided to return to the temple although he did not have a proper building to reside. The Commander of the 53rd regiment, Nanda Haturusinghe made a request to S.A. Somaratne to put up a new building for the temple. After putting up the Sanghavasa, Somaratne also built a pilgrims’ rest in memory of his wife, Wimala Somaratne and his son, Lochana Somaratne. All the expenses for the building were incurred by the Wimala Somaratne Foundation.

The pilgrims’ rest was ceremonially opened on September 9 2017 by the chairperson of Vogue Jewellers, Chandra Hemachandra and S.A. Somaratne.
