Golden Crown invests Rs 1 b in Nuwara Eliya hotel

The Golden Crown Hotel (Pvt) Ltd. will commence operations of the ‘Tea Village’, a luxury boutique hotel for the high-end leisure segment in Nuwara Eliya by the end of this year, Golden Crown, Managing Director Chanuka Wijekoon said last week while addressing the media on the launch of the Golden Crown, the company’s first five-star hotel in Kandy.

He said the 55-room hotel in Nuwara Eliya is being built with an investment of Rs. 1 billion and added, that work on the project is nearing completion.

“We re targeting the Western market for the winter season and the Middle East segment during the low season from April to September,” Wijekoon said. The company is drawing up plans for another property in Kandy.

The Golden Crown in Kandy is the first five star property of the group built with an investment of US$ 15 million.

The 90-room property is to be fully operational by the end of the year. Currently 60 rooms are being operated while the rest are to be launched soon. Located on two acres of land the property was designed by renowned architect Dr. Upendra Rajapakse. “We are expecting a good occupancy rate during the forthcoming festive season and thereafter maintain a higher occupancy rate,” Wijekoon said.

The Golden Crown is owned by The Golden Crown Hotel Pvt. Ltd., is a subsidiary of Serene Holdings and operates Serene Grand Hotel in Kandy, Serene Grand Villa in Kandy, Serene Kings Villa in Nuwara Eliya, Serene Villa in Nuwara Eliya and the Tea Village in Nuwara Eliya, which is currently under construction.

The Golden Crown, General Manager Roshan Fernando said there is stiff competition among four, five-star hotels in the hill capital. However, “we welcome competition and would be the leading luxury hotel in Kandy.”

“A unique feature of the property is that it has banquet facilities to cater to over 2,000 guests at any given time. Besides it has a helipad facility. The hotel combines traditional comfort with modern facilities,” he said.

A fully automated, colour changing, dancing water fountain that greets visitors grabs the attention of visitors.

The Golden Crown Hotel is set amidst verdant paddy fields, surrounded by lush greenery and is a sanctuary to those seeking peace and luxury.

The hotel comprises 72 deluxe rooms, 10 junior suites, six premium suites, a crown suite and a presidential suite complete with a private elevator for the presidential and crown suites, comprise the hotel’s accommodation.

The Golden Crown, Director Finance and Administration, Hansani Wijekoon said the company invested a major share in banquet and accommodation facilities due to the demand for these segments in Kandy. – LF
