Sri Lanka Men to play quarters with Malaysia

Sri Lanka sprang in to the quarter finals and will meet Malaysia tomorow in the Asian rugby Men’s 7’s series 3rd & final leg played at Race Course International Stadium in Colomb.

Blooding some new players in to the squad, the hosts picked up the tempo from the word go, and finished runners up in “Pool A” after beating China and Chinese Taipei on day one.

Lankan Tuskers faced its stiffest test in their opening match ,but gave a torrid time to “Pool A” winners South Korea holding them to a 21 all at one stage before going down fighting 21-28. Koreans led 21-7 at half time.

The three tries came from Jason Dissanayaka, Srinath Sooriyabandara and Danushka Ranjan while Tharinda Ratwatte, Sooriyabandara and Reeza Rafaideen made the conversions.

In their second match Danushka Ranjan scored two tries with Richard Darmapala and Reeza Rafaideen chipping in by scoring one try apiece in a 28-7 win over China. Tharinda Ratwatte (3) and Kevin Dixon (1) added the extra points after leading 14 nil at half time.

In their final game for the day with Chinese Taipei Sri Lanka’s experienced campaigners Tharinda Ratwatte (2), Danushka Ranjan (1), Srinath Sooriyabandara (1) and Richard Darmapala (1) scored tries, posting the day’s top score of 33 nil after leading 21 nil at lemons. Ratwatte (3) and Dixon (1) slotted in the conversions.

South Korea in their other matches beat Chinese Taipei 26-7 and China 12-10 to top “Pool A” being unbeaten.

Hong Kong led the other group (Pool B) with wins over Philippine 21-17, Malaysia 32-5 and Japan 19-7 to remain unbeaten as well. Tomorows Quarter Finals are as follows,
