Addressing the inaugural ceremony of the seventh Buddhist Summit at Temple trees, President Maithripala Sirisena said the summit holds special human significance since it is being held at a time when the whole world is threatened by acts of violence and terrorism.
“The teachings of Buddha are of utmost relevance to addressing the conflict-ridden world today. The event was held under the patronage of President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, with the participation of religious dignitaries from around the world.
The summit, themed ‘Buddhism for World Peace’, was attended by over 1000 representatives from 47 member countries which includes chief prelates from 47 member countries, Bhikkus, scholars, devotees and other local and foreign dignitaries.
“The summit will send an important message on the role of Buddhism in addressing conflicts around the world,” the President said. Prime Minister Wickremesinghe highlighted the importance of respecting all religions to ensure peaceful coexistence in the country.
“Coexistence among all communities and religions will ensure that there is no space for conflict,” he said.
A commemorative stamp was released at the inauguration ceremony. The summit concludes today at the Temple Trees with a cultural show at Nelum Pokuna Theater.
