Refurbished chemistry lab for Royal College, Colombo

The opening of the newly refurbished chemistry lab at Royal College Colombo took place at the College Hall recently. It was built at a cost of Rs.3.5 million under the third phase by the 2003 batch of the College.

The ceremony was presided by Deputy Minister of Economic Development, Dr. Harsha de Silva while other dignitaries including the Principal of Royal College, B.A. Abeyratne, Secretary of the Royal College Union, Athula Munasinghe, sub-committee chairs of the Royal College Union, staff members, old Royalists and fellow members of the Group of 2003 were present at the occasion.

The ceremony also marked the recognition of four outstanding members of the 2003 Group namely, Ajantha Silva, Mazanavi Rumy, Kasun Andrahenadi and Kasun Kosgahakumbura for their contribution to the project.

President of the Group Chamara Ranaweera said the membership of the 2003 Group is committed to give its best for the College to whom all her students owe an immeasurable debt. He also mentioned that a series of projects will be launched to preserve the pride and prestige of the College.

Dr. de Silva said that the Government is committed to raising the quality of education of all children. Our task as a Government is to make it possible. I have used the initiative undertaken by the Group of 2003 last year, to change the Government policy towards education expenditure. I have embraced the concept of “Bricks to Microscopes” to ensure that all students irrespective of the school will be able to foster creativity, harness technological advancements and make quality education available to all. “With such initiatives undertaken by a dynamic group, we are certain that the country’s future is on the right path towards prosperity”, the Deputy Minister said.

Principal, B. A. Abeyratne and Secretary, Royal College Union, Athula Munasinghe also addressed the gathering, elaborating and endorsing the importance of the projects initiated and services rendered to the College by the 2003 Group.

The Royal College Group of 2003 consists of a dynamic and diverse set of professionals and successful entrepreneurs who are committed to serve their alma mater. The Group, as a part of the Royal College Union has been involved in numerous welfare, CSR and school development projects during the past 14 years. The group’s main annual event is the “Rangers” tent hosted at the Battle of the Blues. This event has now become a proud tradition and serves as the main fund raiser for many projects undertaken throughout the year.

“I Gave Back to Royal College” is a project that inducts Royal College on par with leading educational institutes across the globe. Since the launch of this project in 2014, the Group of 2003 has contributed nearly LKR.12 million towards the Advanced Level education in the College. The first phase of the project comprised of digitizing the Physics Laboratories and equipping them with laptops, dongles, multimedia projectors and screens at an approximate cost of LKR.1.5 million in 2014. The second phase of the project witnessed the advancement of a state of the art Chemistry laboratory at a cost of LKR 7million in January 2016. This laboratory is to date considered one of the best equipped laboratories in a national school.
