RTI will help reduce waste and corruption says Speaker

26 November, 2017

A drastic decline in waste and corruption can be expected, exposing uncivilised practices, in light of the Right to Information Act (RTI) coming into operation and has changed the political culture in the country, Speaker Karu Jayasuriya told guests at the National Symposium on the Role of the Independent Commissions at the Ramada Hotel yesterday.

“Society itself has accepted that Independent Councils have done a lot of work with the RTI,” he said.

The Speaker said that the Constitution Council has regular dialogues with the heads of the Independent Commissions.

“A long time ago, we did a study, with an organization set up by very senior public servants and it was headed by the current Chairman of the Independent Public Service Commission. They found that there was approximately 40 percent corruption and wastage in Government expenditure,” he said.
