Dec 3: A squirrel was found to be responsible for cutting multiple Christmas light wires in a New Jersey town.

The town of Sea Girt holds a Christmas tree lighting ceremony each year, but after finding cut wires, police believed vandals were making mischief.

However on Saturday morning, a passerby snapped a photo of the real vandal: a squirrel just nibbling away at the wires, reported NBC 4 New York

Crews hurried to repair and replace the damaged wires when they were first found last week so the town’s Christmas tree lighting could go on as scheduled.

Meanwhile, police planned to keep a close eye on the display in an effort to catch those responsible.

Friday’s ceremony occurred as planned but on Saturday morning, police said they had caught the perpetrator. They released a photo of the suspected vandal: a squirrel. It was a far cry from the young misfits the town had suspected.

Police said they were unable to catch the miniature vandal but the Christmas display will be under constant surveillance to assure no more damage occurred.

Earlier this week, resident John Shibels was surprised to hear of possible vandalism in the borough. ‘This is Mayberry RFD, probably the first vandalism we’ve had in 10 years,’ he said.

Sea Girt police Captain Justin Macko showed NBC 4 New York some of the damaged wires Thursday. ‘It tells me they definitely wanted to do it and they want to accomplish their goal of making sure the lights don’t work,’ he said.
