SLN Women sailors win Dubai’s Emirates Open Netball Tourney

17 December, 2017

The Sri Lanka Navy netball team displayed their team spirit to win the coveted Emirates Open Netball Trophy in Dubai.

The jubilant team returned to the island after touring from 30 November to 2 December. Chairperson Navy netball Captain (Dr) Nayana Wijedorua said ‘This is a tremendous achievement for our team, it was their first overseas tour. We faced the Australian team in the final match. It was a challenge as these players were very much taller than us, yet we managed to edge them through our physical fitness”.

The 12 member team based at SLNS Gemunu is captained by Nadi de Silva. Of this team 4 women have represented Sri Lanka are Hasitha Mendis, Deepika Abeykoon, Shamali Ratnayake and Dulangi Wannithilleke.

The triumphant navy team is coached by Sumitha Alwis and Buddhika Sooriyabandara.

During this tournament there were 7 teams from South Africa, Australia, Dubai and England.

The Navy girls appreciate the support of the Sri Lanka Navy, Netball Association and fans in Dubai who supported them throughout the Tournament.
