Experienced Janidu Himsara leads Antonians this season

St. Anthony’s College cricketers displaying grit and determination, has reached great heights in the field of cricket. After a lean period they have made a strong comeback this season and are doing extremely well to pose a challenge to all leading teams. One of St. Anthony’s notable rivals in the field of cricket St. Joseph’s College, Colombo and they compete for the ‘Murali-Vaas Trophy’, which was inaugurated in 2007 and was named after the world’s highest wicket takerMuttiah Muralitharan and Josephian cricketer Chaminda Vaas. In 2012 the two schools celebrated their historic 100th encounter

St. Anthony’s College, Kandy have not only produced several champion teams but have also produced some of the finest cricketers who have done the country proud by their achievements. The most notable cricketer produced by St. Anthony’s College was Muthiah Muralitharan also became the first Sri Lankan to be inducted to the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame.

During the past few years St. Anthony’s College failed to keep up to those traditions and were demoted to Division Two. Last season they had a good chance of getting promoted but their defeats to St. Benedict’s College and Vidyarhta College deprived them of the due promotion.

This year the mantle of leadership has fallen on the shoulders of Janidu Himsara who is one of the finest all-rounders in school cricket. He is not only a fine attacking batsman, but also a good bowler.

Their new coach is Sampath Perera is one of the experienced persons in the job, who guided Trinity College when he was the coach to achieve 59 outright wins as against six losses from 137 games over a seven and half year period a record that any coach can be proud of. Sampath is a product of D.S. Senanayake College. The Assistant coach is Susantha Basnayake who is giving his fullest support to Sampath. The MIC is Lenin Jayasinghe. This season they have done well to record five outright wins playing against Wesley College, Kingswood College, Taxila MV, Horana, St Anne’s College and an innings win against Royal college, no decision against St. Sebastian’s College Moratuwa, Vidyartha College, Bandaranayake College and lost to St. Sebestians College, Katuneriya on first innings. The games yet to be played are vs Sri Jayawardenapura, vs St. Josephs College 9/10, vs St. Peters College, 16/17, vs St. Benedict’s College 23/24, vs Nalanda College, 26/27,

March Big match vs Trinity College 9/10 and the One day Game following week.
