Injured, vision impaired war heroes dominate

Sri Lanka Army’s Inter Regiment & injured war Heroes’ Chess Championship was concluded recently at the Buwelikada School of Signals and Pangolla ‘Abhimansala 3’ Auditoriums and the prize distribution was held at the Defence Services College, Colombo 2 on Friday December (5).

The Chess Championship was organized by the Sri Lanka Army Chess Committee. This year the Committee decided to add two new events for the Championship especially for the vision-impaired soldiers and for injured war heroes.

The competition was conducted under three categories and the Sri Lanka Signal Corps (SLSC) clinched the championship trophy for the year 2018 under the Inter Regiment Men’s category. In the vision-impaired and injured War Heroes’ category ‘Abhimansala 3’ inmates secured the championship position. SLSC women competitors secured the Women’s trophy.

Major General Amal Karunasekara, Chief of Staff graced the prize awarding ceremony as the Chief Guest.

It was just a few days ago, the Army Chess team secured the first place in the ‘Mercantile and Government Sector’ category during the four-day long Ethugalpura Internationally-rated Chess Challenge Tournament, competed by more than 34 island-wide Chess teams.

Held at the Blue Sky Hotel, the tournament was co-ordinated and organized by Ethugalpura Knight Flame Chess Club.
