Committee to probe Uva CM controversy

28 January, 2018

Parliament has appointed a five-member committee chaired by JVP MP Nihal Galappaththi to conduct a investigation into the incident where Uva Province Chief Minister (CM) Chamara Sampath Dassanayake allegedly forced the Principal of the Badulla Tamil Girls’ School, Bhavani Ragunath to kneel before him. The committee has been appointed subject to the approval of the Sectoral Oversight Committee on Education and Human Resources Development of Parliament. All relevant parties will be summoned before the Committee, including Uva Province Chief Minister, Principal and Provincial Education Secretary, its Chairman MP Galappaththi told the Sunday Observer yesterday.

He said the Committee has not been able to commence investigations as its members are involved in the election campaign of their respective political parties.

“However, we will try our best to see whether there is any possibility of commencing investigations before the February10 LG polls. If not, the Committee will meet soon after the election.
