Thurstan College took major honors in their 55th annual Inter-Schools ‘Battle of Brothers’ Big Match against their traditional rivals Isipathana College which ended in an exciting draw at the SSC Grounds in Maitland Place yesterday.

Isipathana who were set a victory target of 254 runs from a maximum of 57 overs were struggling at 153 for seven wickets in their second innings when the umpires called off play due to bad light after 52 overs of play.

Isipathana of course made a promising start to their run chase as the openers Thevindu Dickwella and Sanjula Bandara put on 65 runs from 19.1 overs.

However, with the introduction of the spinners the game took a dramatic turn with Ayesh Harshana and Janushka Fernando providing Thurstan an outside chance of pulling off an outright victory. The pair created panic among the Isipatana middle order picking up wickets at regular intervals while sharing seven wickets between them.

But the Isipathana tailenders held on determinedly under tremendous pressure as they played out six consecutive maidens at one stage to force a draw in the end.

Earlier, Thurstan went on to extend their overall lead with another fine batting display as they declared the second innings at 140 for five wickets from just 23 overs.

This was after Isipathana had reached 201 for nine wickets in their first innings from their allotted 60 overs. This was mainly due to two superb knocks from Skipper Ayana Siriwardena and Sanjula Abeywickrema who were associated in a fifth wicket partnership of 128 runs.

Abeywickrema hit a top score of 79 while Siriwardena played a fine supporting role with a solid 52.
