‘Girls Battle of the Hills’ Nuwara Eliya on Tuesday

Two leading girls schools in Nuwara Eliya - Gamini National School and Our Ladies Upper School will meet in their inaugural big match Battle of the Hills to be played at Race Course grounds, Nuwara Eliya on Tuesday (6).

The idea to play the inaugural girls Big Match in Nuwara Eliya was mooted under the women’s cricket drive initiated by Sri Lanka Cricket. It was none other than SLC’s Chairman of Women’s Cricket Apsari Singhabahu Tillakaratne, wife of former Sri Lanka Test captain Hashan Tillakaratne, who took the burden of initiating the move which will mark a new chapter in Nuwara Eliya sports. This encounter will comprise of two ladies teams and will truly be an unforgettable cricketing experience for both schools. This would be the first school level cricket encounter taking place in Nuwara Eliya.

Head coach of Gamini National School, Vipul Fernando said that they are looking forward to play a good game on this day against Our Ladies’ Schools. Gamini National School team comprises of eight district level players and out of which one player who is captaining the Gamini squad has now gone to the of provincial level.

This year, Gamini National School cricket team has been able to secure a position amongst the best sixteen women’s Cricket teams in the island.

Fernando appreciated the excellent support rendered by the Rector and Principals of both schools and did not forget the record his sincere thanks to other supporting staff and parents of both schools for their untiring efforts to make this encounter a great success.

Our Ladies’ School coach Ravihara said girls cricket is a new experience to Nuwara Eliya. “We are glad that we were able form a team in our Ladies’ upper school. This is the first time that we are organizing a girl’s big match with Gamini National school.

We have six players who are representing the district team and we hope that we can do well. Our youngest player is just 12 years old. We hope to give a good fight in this first ever encounter”, he said.
