Kandy achieved success mainly on team work - says Lasantha

Kandy Sports Club’s Rugby Chairman, Lasantha Wijesuriya says the good understanding among the players, the discipline and the all-important playing as a team and the support they got from the fans that really made the team a champion outfit in the Sri Lanka Rugby league and knockout

tournaments. It was with his knowledge and experience along dedication guided the players excellently.

From the day he took over the chairmanship, he has been doing a good job he knows the game and also knows how to handle matters, as a former player, captain and coach. He has been commanding a rugby force around forty players for over a decade. He knows his team has got the

physical strength needed for rugby to last the pace and to resist any onslaught from the opposition.

Former St. Anthony’s College ruggerite Lasantha led the Nittawela club to win the triple in1997 as annunbeaten team. That was the first time they were unbeaten all three tournaments, under the guidance of Nimal Leweke’s coaching. Lasantha’s wide experience and pleasant approach is what drew the players to Nittawela with innovative ideas that encouraged the players to unite and be as a team.

Lasantha leaving school joined CH and FC on an invitation from Kishin Butani and was selected to play for the country in the Asiad which was held in South Korea. From CH and FC he came back to his home town club Kandy SC and was put on the correct track by Kandy Sports Club’s administration led by Malik Samarawickrema. Kandy Sports Club today can be rated as the best rugby playing club in the country, with a fully equipped International standard rugby with all the

requisites made available for rugby players. Due to highest level support extended by way of finding all needed resources the club is blessed with an Ultra Modernized Gymnasium with all equipment.

Hemaka Amarasuriya former Chairman Singer Sri Lanka and late Dr. Sarath Kapuwatte too made valuable contributions towards the development of the club since year 2000.

Late Dr. Sarath Kapuwatte as president, had the unique achievement of being the President of the Club the year they won the first ever trophy in 1992, from that year he has been the man behind the success of Kandy Sports Club. He is one president who received the fullest support from every Committee Member.
