Sri Lankan British girl wins Youth Art Competition in UK

11 March, 2018

Chiara Eratne, a seven-year-old Sri Lankan British girl from Birmingham, United Kingdom won the Youth Art Competition titled ‘Inspire 17' in the category 5-9 years organised recently by the prestigious Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, United Kingdom.

The competition is held annually for young people aged 5-19 years of age. The winning entries and other short-listed art work was displayed over the summer months at the Museum's Art Gallery for public viewing.

The theme of the competition this year was ‘Art for future Birmingham – What art would you make today for the people of tomorrow?'.

The participants were invited to submit their art work in various forms ranging from painting and drawing to film, fashion and sculpture.

Chiara chose to communicate a matter very close to her heart and it was about endangered animals. She chose to present her thoughts in a three-part drawing. She sent an explanation in her drawing as “WATCH OUT!!! People in the future will be chopping down more trees to create crazy new gadgets so animal numbers will drop. The first section shows how it was, the second one shows how it will be and the third one shows animal numbers falling.

This picture is a warning! She was excited to be invited to the ‘Inspire 17’ launch with Bollywood dancing and tea party at the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery. Chiara was even more thrilled when she was announced as the winner in the age category 5-9 and to receive an iPad as the prize.

Chiara loves drawing and anything creative and to have her drawing put on public display at the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery was her dream come true.
