Ruvindu Gunasekera top ranked batsman at Sri Lanka T20

A little known batsman with big achievements has taken the Sri Lankan domestic T20 championship by storm as he finished with the highest run aggregate in the qualifying round last week.

Ruvindu Gunasekera, a left hand top order batsman aggregated 272 runs while playing for his Saracens Sports Club in the five qualifying round matches to finish ahead of Sri Lanka players Dilshan Munaweera and Niroshan Dickwella who played more matches than him with less aggregates.

Munaweera aggregated 253 from seven matches while Dickwella had 170 which included the quarter and semi finals. Gunasekera finished as the third best hitter of sixes (10) and the second best individual score of 81 not out against Panadura SC, just behind Thisara Perera who had 84. He also had a better average than Kusal Mendis (52.00).

The South Paw hammered 56 against the finalist CCC and 57 against Army SC who qualified for the semi finals. Gunasekera also bowls leg-spin and the ‘Googly’ and was among the wickets taking eight of them with better performances than the established limited over spinners Ajantha Mendis and Dilruwan Perera.

Gunasekera had his primary education at Prince of Wales College and later moved to St.Peter’s College before leaving for Canada where he not only qualified as a Bachelor of Business Administration at the Toronto University, but also played for the Canadian team as a 16-year old boy in 2008.

Domestic coaches who have seen Gunasekera’s exploits say he is not second to any of the current Sri Lanka players, but better than most in terms of consistency.
