NBRO probes landslide risk in Bibile

A team from the National Building Research Organization (NBRO) has been sent to evaluate the landslide risks in the Malbatuhela area in Bibile. According to Senior Geologist of the NBRO, Dr. Gamini Jayatissa the NBRO has commenced investigations in to the possible risks in the area.

A landslide risk warning was issued for the area on Friday following adverse weather conditions. Currently 189 residents from 51 families have been evacuated from the area and are receiving shelter at the Bibila Unagolla Rajamaha Vihara.

“They have been provided with necessary aid” Assistant Director of the Disaster Management Center, Pradeep Kodippili said.

Meanwhile the Department of Meteorology has predicted rains of over 75mm for Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces as well as the Galle and Matara district. Showers or thundershowers are also expected in all areas of the island except for the Northern province the Department of Meteorology said. (MB)
