Railway fare hike in the offing

18 March, 2018

The gazette notification to increase train fares by around 15 percent will be issued by next month, General Manager Railways S.M. Abeywickrama said.

“There hasn’t been an increase in train fares since 2008. Train fares have remained low compared to bus fares which were increased several times. Therefore, we hope this is a positive move,” Abeywickrama said.

He said approval to proceed with the fare revision has already been received. He said the revenue generated via tickets will be increased as a result. The current minimum railway fare is Rupees 10. Speaking about the Railways operating under a loss, Abeywickrama said since they are offering a service, it cannot be measured in rupees and cents. “If commuters could to work on time, it is a great service to the country,” he said. Meanwhile, Railway Trade Union Alliance (RTUA) commended the decision to increase the train fares.

“Train fares have not increased for a decade. Therefore, this is definitely a good move. Also, it will help reduce the loss incurred by the Railways each year,”said Co- convener of RTUA, Lal Ariyaratne.
