9,960 students obtain 9 As at this year’s O/L exam

The results of the 2017 GCE (O/L) examination were released recently. According to the results 9,960 students have obtained 9 As. It has comparatively increased from last year as last year it stood at 8, 224. The pass rate for Mathematics has improved to 67.24% from the 2016 figure of 62.81%. Meanwhile, 73.05% of the candidates have gained eligibility for Advances Level and in 2016 the eligibility rate was 69.94%. Six students have ranked first at this year’s examination. The Examinations Department said that the six students were Kasuni Hansana from the Gampaha Rathnawali Balika Vidyalaya, Chamodi Raveesha from the Gampaha Ratnawali Balika Vidyalaya, Navodya Prabhawi from the Girls’ High School, Kandy, Amandhi Divyanjana from the Mahamaya Balika Vidyalaya, Kandy, Randi Lakpriya from the Matara Sujatha Balika Vidyalaya and Kavisha Prathibhath from the Ratnapura Sivali Central College.

Education Minister, Akila Viraj Kariyawasam congratulated the students and said, “This year the students have performed really well comparing to last year. It is a good sign of progress. Many students have passed this year, not because the Examination Department decreased the pass mark but instead they have performed well due to hard work and dedication. The students who have not qualified well need not be disappointed instead they can follow the vocational stream where 26 subjects are introduced.”
