Kandy violence: Three more arrested

Three more suspects believed to be connected to the recent communal unrest in Kandy were arrested yesterday as a result of continued investigations by the Terrorism Investigations Department of the Police.

According to Police Spokesperson, SP Ruwan Gunasekara they are suspected of taking part in an attack on a place of worship in Ambatenna, Welekade area in the Pujapitiya Police Division and for acting in a disorderly manner.

The Police arrested the trio from the Kahawatta, Ambatenna area in Kandy. They have been identified as 55-year-old Sunil Jayasinghe, 21-year-old Sanjeewa Pradeepa Kumara and 22-year-old Lakshan Bandaranayake.

“The suspects will be handed over by the TID to the Pujapitiya Police for further investigation,” SP Gunasekara said. Meanwhile, the suspect believed to be the mastermind behind the riots, Amith Weerasinghe of the Mahasohon Balakaya and 26 others connected to the violence were further remanded till May 14 by the Teldeniya Magistrate last week.
