Sinhala and Hindu New Year

20 May, 2018

Sinhala and Hindu New Year is a national festival. It is celebrated by Sinhala and Tamil people in Sri Lanka in the month of April. People celebrate the festival for two days. The rituals associated with Aluth Avurudda begin with a bath on the last day of the old year and viewing the moon on the same night. People wear new clothes in the New Year and prepare meals at an auspicious time. On the day following the New Year people anoint oil which purifies the mind as well as the body.
