Rosy mulls scrapping parking deal with Tenaga

20 May, 2018

Colombo Mayor Rosy Senanayake said she is in consultation with legal experts to explore the possibility of revoking an agreement the Council had signed, during her predecessor’s tenure, with Tenaga Car Parks (Pvt) Ltd to manage several parking locations in Colombo.

The move follows public uproar over exorbitant fines being charged by the Council subsequent to the introduction of solar-powered parking meters in Colombo. Several of these issues were recently highlighted in an in-depth article in the Sunday Observer citizen page published on May 6, 2018. “I believe this is totally unfair and there has to be a better system.

The Mayor said that she had instructed the Commissioner of the Colombo Municipal to suspend all fines charged from parking meters. Meanwhile, Director Operations at Tenaga Car Parks (Pvt) Ltd, Rehab Ariff said yesterday they have instructed their enforcement officers not to issue parking fines from Friday (May 18) although the company is yet to receive any official intimation from the CMC to stop charging fines.

We would be looking at ways of rectifying these issues and I am also in the process of consulting legal experts to find whether this contract can be cancelled,” the Mayor told reporters at a press conference on Friday.
