Army, Navy win at beach volleyball

Beach Volleyball organized by the Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation and sponsored by the distributors of Sunquick CW Mackie Group of Companies came to close yesterday with the Army and Navy winning the Championship for men and women respectively.

The under 21 men’s title was won by Air Force when they trounced Davisamara Vidyalaya, Seeduwa boys three sets to one (21-12, 19-21, 15-10, 17-15).

The open women’s final between Navy and Army became a one-sided game when the women sailors had a comfortable two sets to nil (21-14, 21-06) victory to go away with the National title. The Navy was represented by Sagarika and Kasuni while the Army had the services of Chathurika and Thamara Kumari.

The men’s final was evenly contested by the Airmen and Sailors with the Airmen

winning the first set to take a firm lead 21-15. The second set began and the soldiers made a fine come back and was leading at the break with the score

12-9. Air Force tried everything to get closer to Army’s total but their effort failed and lost the set 21-16. Army went on to win the set at 15-13. Though the Airmen lost this third and final game to give the Army a 2-1 victory they had to play the ‘Golden Set’ to decide the winner. The ‘Golden Set’ had to be introduced here as both these teams were unbeaten throughout the tournament said and official when questioned as why the ‘Golden Set’ was played.

Men’s Under 21: Air Force beat Davisamara MV 3-1 (21-12, 19-21, 15-10, 17-10)

Women’s Open: Navy beat Army 2-0 (21-14, 21-06)

Men’s Open: Army beat Air Force 3-1 (15-21, 21-16, 15-13, 15-13)
